Yesterday I had a major problem with iTunes. Okay, so I use Mac 10.3. I realize it's a bit outdated, but money doesn't grow on trees. Anyway, I was sitting here listening to music and browsing the internet when suddenly my computer does what it loves to do - FREEZE. iTunes stopped, and I couldn't do anything. Now, what I always do, that solves the problem, is I shut the computer off and then turn it back on.
So I did that, and when I tried to re-launch iTunes, instead of the regular loading message it said something like 'recovering iTunes library.xml' or something along those lines. I figured maybe this was some sort of update or something it was automatically generating. But, when I stopped it, only about a quarter of my music was in the library and all my playlists were long gone. All of my music files were intact, but the playlists were totally erased. So I went to the iTunes folder, and I now have one file that says 'iTunes Library', and two beside it - 'iTunes Library (Damaged)', and 'iTunes Library (Damaged) 1'. All my playlists are long gone, and LUCKILY I did save all of them to my desktop a couple of weeks ago. But unfortunately a couple of those folders are mysteriously empty now. I'm really distraught, because I did nothing out of the ordinary. I now have lost LOTS of my music, and would love it if someone could please tell me if there is some possible way I could restore my iTunes library exactly the way it was before, because I'm very unhappy and sad about this. I'm good with my computer; I back it up regularly. But this was completely unexpected. Please help! I would very much appreciate it.

What on earth is iTunes library? In the past, iTunes library was an XML file that contained all of the data on your media library. These days, it has a custom file format ITL and is responsible for keeping more than your playlists straight. Solution #1. Recover iTunes Library File from Time Machine

Note: This fix only works for you who are using Mac and have a working Time Machine backup, and you back up regularly enough not to loose too much data. Otherwise you should turn to the following solution.

4. Open iTunes with the restored version in place and make sure that everything is working. Once you confirm that iTunes is back to normal, delete the broken library file on your Desktop.

If you don't have any existing backup, then the only choice is taking more extreme measures to completely recreate your iTunes library.

Note: This method is drastic, and it's very much possible that you can end up worse off than when you began. Thus we strongly recommend that you back up the existing iTunes folder before going any further. Besides, with this method, a few types of information of the original iTunes media files might be lost in the process, such as star ratings, play counts, and date added. 2. If you enabled iCloud Music Library while opening iTunes, click File and select Add to Library. Then navigate to your existing iTunes Media folder, highlight it and click Open. iTunes will then reimport your existing media files.

3. If you doesn't enable iCloud Music Library, you may get an error message asking you to select a folder for your iTunes library. Then you should select your existing library folder and repeat the steps above to re-add all of your media files.
